In many places in South Africa, fishing boats and charter boats launch directly off the beach where there are no sheltered bays or harbors. this is one of the most dangerous boating activities and many boaters have lost their lives in boating accidents here. These dangerous boat launching sites include St Lucia, Sodwana Bay, Cape Vidal, Rocky Bay, Mtunzini and Shelly beach.

The skippers leave it up to the experienced tractor driver to get the timing between the sets of waves right. He very seldom gets it wrong.

As you can imagine, the tractors in use do not last very long due to the corrosion caused by operating in sea water every day.
