South Africans seek shelter, food after flooding kills hundreds with more rain forecast

South African residents in the Durban region fled to community halls on Saturday to seek food and shelter after the ongoing flooding this week left some without homes and others without power or water.

Even with the forecast predicting more of the rain that has poured over the KwaZulu-Natal province for several days, some residents of Durban began to dig through the mud and rubble trying to find people killed in the flooding, as well as the belongings of lost relatives.

Others surveyed the damage, including a mother who said Friday she believes two of her children were swept away by the flood.

"I’m very sad but I cannot be angry at anyone because it’s God’s plan," Bonakele Mtshali said.

Authorities say more than 40,000 people have been impacted by the weather, with more in the forecast Saturday night.
